Cosmos Global Documentaries The 3 Pearls Of Andalucia Córdoba, Granada, Sevilla [DVD] [NTSC]
 Product Description
Along the Rio Guadalquivir is Córdoba. Today the former caliphs residence of the Omaiyad is a lively city with an historic past. In 152 B.C. the town was founded during the rule of Claudius Marcellu and it was then that the Roman conquerors named it Corduba. Later the town became the capital of the province of Baetica, the hot southern region of Spain. At the beginning of the 8th century the town was the headquarters of its recent conquerors, Arabian governors and emirs and even today the architectural influence of the Moors is visible. In the 10th century A.D. the town reached the zenith of its prosperity. It is believed that almost a million people once lived in the Mecca of the West. The Great Mosque, today's Mezquita, was extended and enlarged during that time. Marble, jaspis and granite columns decorate the beautiful interior of the mosque that contains eight hundred columns. The old city of Granada extends across three hills, Sacromonte, the world famous Alhambra and Abaicín, a once densely populated Moorish district with almost thirty mosques. For several centuries around sixy thousand Moors brought the citys maze of alleys to life but only a few of the historic Islamic buildings and mosques have survived. Seville is todays pulsating capital of Andalucia and is still strongly influenced by the brilliant architectural achievements of the Moors. In former times the Real Alcázar was the residence of the regions Arabic rulers but most of its buildings were constructed during the reign of Peter The Cruel. Casa De Pilatos is one of the most beautiful palatial buildings in Seville. The residence of the Dukes of Medinacelli was built between 1492 and 1520 following a pilgrimage by one of the dukes to the Holy Land. On his return journey, following the same route that the first Marqués of Tarifa took through Italy, he brought back several valuable columns and fountains made of carrara marble that today adorn the beautiful exterior and gardens of the residence. The shoreline of the Guadalquivir River in the land of flamenco is full of life and joie de vivre. The true heart of Spain surely lies in Andalusia in the hot southern region of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Blind Man of Seville [Paperback]
Robert Wilson (Author)

Amazon.co.uk Review
The very title The Blind Man of Seville raises some of the most interesting questions in this original thriller, which breaks the mould of the police procedural far more than seems likely in its seemingly conventional early pages.
A series of men and women are killed by torture and their eye-lids or eyes taken from them in the process--but they die if anything of an excess of sight, of being forced to watch the unendurable. As Inspector Falcon does the legwork of the case, and gets more and more teasing messages about sight and light from the ingenious and vicious killer, we find ourselves wondering whether he himself is the blind man, if there is something he is refusing to see.

At the same time, he is clearing the studio of his dead painter father, and reading journals containing a horribly plausible version of the man he thought he knew--a bisexual gangster who fought for Fascism and the Nazis in Spain and Russia. And around him Seville is having its intense and bizarre Holy Week celebrations, with bullfights and with vast puppets of sacred figures looming around the streets.

This is a book of surreal intensity which plays by all the rules of the detective novel and yet gives the reader so much disturbingly more. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
Praise for The Blind Man of Seville 'Crime writing at its very best, but it is also something more. It observes no limits, it begs no one's pardon. It excites, it surprises and it satisfies. This is a fine important novel' Literary Review 'Admirably paced and enthrallingly elaborate' Sunday Times 'The Blind Man of Seville is an ingenious and compelling thriller' Daily Telegraph 'This is powerful evocative stuff' Observer 'As an evocation of the emotional labyrinth of postwar Tangiers and as a tale of artistic drift, it's rather brilliant -- a detective story Paul Bowles never wrote' Guardian A wonderful, if dark and disturbing, literary detective novel' Time Out 'To call Robert Wilson's 'The Blind Man of Seville' a thriller is to do a grave injustice to an utterly stunning achievement. The central narrative of the detective on the verge of a nervous breakdown is a psychological thriller of real profundity. Wonderful!' Paul Preston, author of 'Franco'.

An essential guidebook for anyone planning to walk the Way of St James. Review
With a great deal of humour, Debs describes life in a remote valley in Murcia, Spain, while she and her husband are renovating a shed into a liveable house with all the modern commodities necessary for us Northern Europeans. All the while their Spanish neighbours are watching, shaking their heads.
Wild life, in the form of spiders, wild boars and scorpions; pets - whether dogs, cats or cockatoos; neighbourly courtesies, being over-the-fence exchange of produce or at special occasions, are all things anybody who has settled among the Spanish in a rural environment can relate to. Debs describes it with a wonderful sense of humour - aiming both at our peculiar set ways as well as our hosts'.
It is easy reading, full of humour and love for the Spanish
way of life. I enjoyed reading it because it is the first book I have come across that I can relate to after 12 years of sharing my life with the Murcians.
Read it - it is a true description of rural Murcian life from an expat's point of view!
Biggy Marshall, Murcia
A book I read avidly, having started greedily after shelving the current. Hard to put down as it's like being there! It's a well written book full of interest and humour.
Paul Spooner
I could have read this book in one go but I savoured it over two sessions. It was brilliant. Wish it was longer! Look forward to the next one.
Shari Ferari
Your book arrived, and I dived straight into it and forgot to make the old man any dinner . It's a really good read, and it's just as if I was listening to you on the phone - you write so descriptively and confidently that the pages just fly by! I have pretty much decided that there are far too many spiders and nowhere near enough wine for my liking, and that you have achieved what most women would have nightmares about!
Susan Beck
Both Sonia and I so very much enjoyed reading Deb's book,
Spiders and Wine. Neither of us could put the book down. It was so entertaining with many laughs and quite a number of things we so easily identify with.
Jim and Sonia Bishop --The Costa Calida Chronicle, July 2008
Review
This book covers many of the humorous aspects of living temporarily in a static caravan in the Murcian campo whilst trying to create (illegally, as it turned out) a home from an old casita! It describes many of the Spanish habits and foibles, the surroundings, the climate, and all the wildlife with which Deborah herself co-exists, including her ever increasing zoo of parrots, dogs and cats.
This book is an interesting, funny and realistic story of a British couple and their move to the north-west area of Murcia, the trials and tribulations, good happenings and the kindness of neighbours, along with the inherent difficulties and the anticipated joys of moving to sunny, complicated, sometimes frustrating but always fascinating Spain.
Anyone interested in Spain, moving to Spain or who has actually moved here will enjoy this well written and absorbing account, which grew out of Deborah sending emails to friends and family detailing her daily happenings and all the ordinary and not so ordinary things which make up the life of this ex-pat couple.
Anyone who enjoys a good read particularly about the love affair the British have with Spain (albeit sometimes a love-hate relationship) will enjoy this book!

Death In The Afternoon [Paperback]
Ernest Hemingway (Author

Book Description
HEMINGWAY'S CLASSIC PORTRAIT OF THE PAGEANTRY OF BULLFIGHTING
Product Description
A fascinating look at the history and grandeur of bullfighting, Death in the Afternoon is also a deeper contemplation on the nature of cowardice and bravery, sport and tragedy, and is enlivened throughout by Hemingway's pungent commentary on life and literature.

Seen through his eyes, bullfighting becomes an art, a richly choreographed ballet, with performers who range from awkward amateurs to masters of great grace and cunning.
