Romeo del rocio in huelva.
Romeria del Rocio, Huelva
12th June 2008
Romeria style pilgrimage and fiesta at the mouth of the  Guadalquivir River in honour of the local patron saint Virgen del Rocio at
Whitsun, the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday.
The Virgen Del Rocio has been the patron saint of Almonte since the 15th century, when a hunter found a statue of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk near the marshes. ( who left it there doesn't seem to be an issue)
The Virgen Del Rocio  can cure disease, infertility and mental disorders.
Local groups dress up in traditional garb and there are processions from many places, on foot or horse drawn carts to the town of Almonte.
Eventually they arrive at the shrine and various chants are performed before the the 'Virgen' is paraded around.

The party in the marshes then gets under way.
