The Maios Fiesta is of Celtic origin and celebrates the arrival of good weather in Galicia. Pontevedra Maios Fiesta is timed to coincide with the first spring flowers. It is a traditional fiesta throughout Galicia and especially so in the cities of Pontevedra and Ourense. Since 1970, Plaza de la Ferrería Square in Pontevedra has been the festive setting for a competition to elect the best maios – figures created out of branches and flowers.
