Pobla del Duc, Grape Battle Fiesta, Valencia

On September 1 in the small town of Pobla del Duc, between Xátiva and Gandia, Valencia, Spain take part in the excitement of a battle where the only weapons are grapes.

La Pobla del Duc celebrates every year a traditional Feast of the Raïm , an original and quirky fun event which highlights the battle of the grape, a release of hundreds of bunches of grapes among the participants.

This fiesta celebrates the town's agricultural tradition. Truck loads of grapes are distributed among the participants.

Around 40 tons of grapes so that at twelve o'clock noon is the battle can begin.

This popular event in Spain, the feast of Raïm celebrates the wine tradition of La Pobla del Duc, in which 70% of the population is engaged in agriculture and where the grapes are the main source of income.

The origin of the Raïm goes back to the decade of 30 and was the celebration of the end of the harvest, a festive time in which farmers would toss the rest of his collection and was known by the name of cabrerots .

La Pobla del Duc also includes a civic celebration of the grape, with a procession attended by farmers dressed in traditional costumes and decorated with fruit baskets. The festival ends with the traditional grape stomp.

Cuilt between 1596 and 1916in a Baroque style and the High Altar corresponds to designs by the architect Ventura Rodríguez. The collegiate church is dedicated to the Asunción de Nuestra Señora.

Gandía
Palacio Ducal de los Borja - Los Borja Ducal Palace

One of the most important buildings in the Valencian Community and was the birthplace of San Francisco de Borja who later became Pope.

The oldest part of the building dates from the 15th century, but was restored and turned into a sanctuary by the Jesuits.

The Garnacha Tintorera grape is an agricultural staple in this area and every year the people of Pabla del Duc use it as a centre piece for a fiesta to celebrate the end of the harvest.

All the usual fiestas traditions and in this one they have a civic procession where all the local farmers and officials parade around town.
