Miguel Poveda
Miguel
Poveda
Miguel Angel Poveda Leon (Badalona,
Barcelona - February 13, 1973) is a famous Spanish flamenco singer,
known by the stage name of Miguel Poveda.
Miguel
Poveda started off in a powerful manner: he swept away the competition
in the Festival Nacional del Cante de las Minas (National Mining Song
Festival) in La Unión (Murcia) in 1993. He won four of the most
important awards, among which was the most coveted, the Lámpara Minera.
This feat, which had not been achieved by anyone since Antonio Fernández
Díaz Fosforito in 1956, is all the more surprising considering that he
is a Catalan and a payo, and that he has no artistic predecessors in his
family. However, Miguel Poveda wasn't a beginner. He had already started
singing in public, at least since 1988, mainly when he accompanied his
sister, the bailaora Sonia Poveda. After Las Minas, Miguel Poveda has not ceased to draw attention. Now, it is for the ability that he has developed in a short time. He is one of the talented young artists who are dedicated to orthodox, traditional singing, although he doesn't scorn innovative projects. In spite of his youth, Miguel Poveda has already undertaken several tours of Europe, one tour of Japan, he has participated in the Festival of Culture and Arts in Ramallah (Palestine) and in the Edinburgh International Festival, as a guest artist in the theatre staging of "La Vida es un Sueño" by Calixto Bieito. His art has gone beyond the flamenco milieu: cinema director Bigas Luna showed his interest for him in his film "La Teta y la Luna" (1994), in which he was one of the protagonists. Miguel Poveda was awarded, at the festival of “Cante de las Minas de La Unión” held in 1993, with four prizes, one of them, ‘Lampara Minera’ this one the most sought-after all of them. From that moment on, his career took on a rising route: he played in the movie ‘La Teta y La Luna, by Bigas Luna; recorded his first record, ‘Viento del Este’, and appeared on national and international festivals such as Logroño’s ‘Actual’, Madrid’s ‘Tarantos’, Sevilla’s ‘Bienal de Arte Flamenco’, Paris’ ‘Fiesta de la Música’ and Antwerp’s ‘Festival de Flamenco’, amongst many others. In 1997 he produced a show for a seminar that was organized by the University of Bologna. It was based on the Poets of the Generation 1927. The Festival of Culture and Arts in Ram Allah, Palestine, also requested him and soon after he did his first tour to Japan. In 1998 he presented his work ‘Suena Flamenco’ (which was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Latino Awards) and collaborated as a guest artist in the theatre play ‘La Vida es Sueño’, directed by Calixto Bieito, in The International Festival of Edinburgh. As well, he has performed in other festivals such as Paris’ ‘Musicora’, Barcelona’s ‘Grec’ (where he premiered the production ‘Flamenco en Orquesta’, together with Joan Albert Amargós and Chicuelo), Lorrach’s ‘Stimmen’ and Sardinia’s ‘Emmas’, amongst many others. Also ‘Zagúan’ ‘Contrastes’, Qawwali Jondo or ‘Poemes de l’Exili d’Alberti’ (which received the award of the city of Barcelona), are some of his latest works. In 2004 Miguel participated in the XXXII Internacional Cervantino Festival and goes to Mexico to the Internacional Book Festival, he also collaborated with the Nacional Orquestra of Spain, presentanting his work “ Suite Flamenca” by Joan Albert Amargos and Chicuelo, and going in a tour inside Spain and France with the show Qawwali Jondo. He also is presentig his last discographic production “ DESGLAÇ”. Connoisseurs and critics describe Miguel Poveda as an artist of huge talent and skills. He likes innovation, at the same time, as having a deep respect for tradition. Music Style [editing] of flamenco singer and interpreter of other music genres with which enriches his artistic career in a constant experimentation in his work, although the Flemish since its inception is starting his music. Poveda is interested in going beyond the image of the singer to use the skin and enters other areas that are not always well seen by the more orthodox world of flamenco. Sample this interest in the search for art in other genres are his numerous collaborations with artists from various disciplines, work that gives meet other public not accustomed to flamenco. For his Catalan origin, whose father and mother murciano La Mancha, without Andalusian ancestry, find more difficulties in its infancy that with tenacity and thanks to his talent finally gets defeat to grow artistically as singer from Barcelona, although later in 2003, moved its residence in Seville, including Catalonia in his musical career, as evidenced later in Desglaç. Desglaç represents an original and risky bets in Catalan interpretation of Poveda, in which disc gives musical life to a successful selection of works by several poets in the Catalan language in a musical production of exquisite sensitivity to music from various authors, for the first time editing a full record in Catalan in a voice of flamenco singer, with great acceptance by public and critical, hard to get that build bridges between the Catalan culture and the world of flamenco, awakening the public of mutual interest between the two cultures . At no time left root of his music, flamenco, even while editing this and other productions not strictly flamenco, as well as some collaborations alternating concerts presenting them with performances of flamenco singing.
