MADRID 1808
Programme based on three elements: exhibitions, publications and scenic
arts.
Scenic Arts
The most surprising proposal is the large-format street show 6 Goyas 6,
created by Pere Pinyol, with musical direction by Carles Santos and the
special participation of La Fura dels Baus and Carles Padrissa. This
installation will take over the Prado Museum, Puerta del Sol, Plaza
Mayor, Plaza de Dos de Mayo, Plaza de Oriente and Cibeles. It will kick
off in the afternoon of May 1st, although the central part of the show
will take place throughout the evening of May 2nd, with La Fura's
closure in Cibeles.
The show is based on works by Francisco de Goya, and portrays the most
significant events of the uprising. Works by the artist will become
alive in a historic interpretation incorporating dance, theatre, parades
and music by prestigious creators and companies.
Exhibitions
Madrid 1808 is the exhibition (with a double location and on display
from April 25th to the end of September) organized by the City Council
to commemorate the events which took place on this date. The section
Guerra y territorio (War and Territory) at the History Museum offers a
geographic portrait of that time through notes, maps or plans. Many of
these have never been published, and they offer a unique perspective on
the development of the Napoleonic campaigns.
The second section, Ciudad y protagonistas (City and Figures), at Conde
Duque, offers a perspective on the role of the people of Madrid between
March and December, 1808. It will explain the situation in which both
the country and Madrid were at the time: the Court, the Mutiny of
Aranjuez and the surrender upon Napoleon's arrival. This is possible
through documents and objects from the time which have been kept in some
municipal institutions, like the History Museum, the City's Archive, the
Municipal Newspaper and Periodicals Library and the Historical Library,
as well as pieces from other institutions.
The exhibition calendar also includes the travelling show El Dos de Mayo
en los distritos (May 2ndthrough the districts), which will travel
through the cultural centres of the district's council from April to
September. Furthermore, the show España 1808-1814: la nación en armas
(Spain 1808-1814: a Nation in Arms), organized by the Ministry of
Defence and the State Society for Cultural Commemorations, will be
showcased at Teatro Fernán Gómez.
Online and Off-line Publications
Lastly, a collection of volumes will be published to bring readers
closer to those times. Aside from these, which in many cases have never
been published, there will be others like the new volume of the
collection Hitos de Madrid (Madrid Landmarks), which, under the title
Dos de Mayo, will include tales for children and young adults by
Fernando Marías, Espido Freire, Martín Garzo and Marta Rivera. Zaragoza
City Council and Ediciones Santillana present a joint publication: Rutas
de los Sitios de Zaragoza y por el Madrid de 1808. Guía El País-Aguilar
(Routes through the Sites of Zaragoza's and Madrid in 1808. El
País-Aguilar Guide). Furthermore, the novel El 19 de Marzo y el 2 de
Mayo (March 19th and May 2nd), the third work of the first series of the
National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós, will be published in paperback
and given out for free.
All of these documents and graphic material will be accessible online,
as well as books, paintings or films. Along this line, there will be
other tributes like several plaques in remembrance of figures like Daoíz
and Velarde, Agustina de Aragón or Manuela Malasaña, as well as others
at the places where the events took place, such as the Cemetery of May
3rd, which will be rehabilitated and will have a new plaque, or the
Field Hospital, neighbouring Plaza de Dos de Mayo.
