"Lunes de Aguas"
Salamanca
Monday following Easter.
24th March 2008
The Spanish as we know need very little
excuse for a festival- but a festival in Spain to welcome prostitutes
into the city and a festival immediately after Easter is stretching
things a bit.
Back in the day, King Felipe II banned
prostitutes from the city of Salamanca during the Easter Religious
events.
On the day after Easter they were
allowed back in and the local students in the 16c who must have been a
pretty uncouth lot gathered at the outskirts of the city to welcome them
back and help them over the river.
These days some how this has become a
festival were the local people gather on the outskirts of the city for a
huge picnic and eat local foodstuffs. This is good timing after all the
abstinence of Lent and Easter. All the usual singing, dancing and daring
do's which are an essential element of Spanish festivals.
