Valencia
29th August 2008

Possibly the most famous weird event in Spain occurs on the last Wednesday in August every year when tons of tomatoes are dumped in the street for participants to throw at each other. A huge tomato fight in the street in the little town of Brunol just outside Valencia. The Cheste F1 circuit is also in this town.
It is said that t he event remembers a day in 1945 when children had a tomato battle in the street and the grown ups who needed cheering after years of war and hardship thought it seemed like good fun. Every year since thousands of red, slimy people agree with them.
There is a whole week of festivities surrounding the big day.

The event is started at about 11 am when a large ham is placed at the top of a greasy pole, local heroes fight to the one to get the ham so that the tomato battle can begin.
The weeklong festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks and  on the night before the tomato fight, there is a paella cook-off.
