Kite Festival
9, 10, 11th November
Kite Festival
The Fuerteventura kite festival has been taking place since 1987, and is usually held on the weekend nearest to 8th of November lasting for 3 days.

It takes place on ‘La Playa del Burro’, a beach situated in the dunes of Corralejo.

The Festival attracts an ever growing number of participants from all over the world, the majority of European participants being from Britain Germany and the Canaries.

A recently formed kite club for the deaf & dumb came to take part in the 2002 festival and integrated perfectly.

Many of the people interviewed have been coming since the Festival was first founded and even have their own slogan ‘ The Fuerteventura Kite Family’.

The start of the event, usually a Friday, is marked by the distribution of commemorative T- shirts and an all day ‘free fly’ on the beach.

The following morning the Stars of the Kite world display their craftsmanship & skill until dusk.

After dinner there is a night display on the ‘Playa de Corralejo’.

The Kite Festival at La Playa del Burro attracts flyers from around the world, who flock to the beach for the strong Atlantic Trade winds that blow a steady pace accross Fuerteventura in early November.

The weekend begins with a "free fly" on the Friday afternoon that gives participants and spectators a first look at the huge variety of kites on display. The following day sees the kite flying start in earnest and dazzling skills are demonstrated by world-class kite craftsmen.

Sunday is a day for all the family, as around 150 kites are handed out for children to have a go, while little parachuting teddy bears drop sweets from the skies and kids of all ages rush around to try and catch them before they hit the ground. Raffles are drawn and prizes are given out, but the highlight of the day is the exhilarating kite combat. Highly manoeuvrable stunt kites go one-on-one as they engage in spectacular aerial warfare that ends with the first kite to fall.

After dinner a fireworks display rounds off this wonderful weekend and everyone can finally stop craning their necks skywards.
