Fiesta de las Piraguas.
9th August 2008
Descenso Internacional del Sella
- Canoe festival.
 International descent
of the Sella River
Something a bit different for Spain- a fiesta on the river.
Serious sport and lots of fun on the first Saturday in August. The River Sella in Asturias is the course and the banks of the river all the fun of the fair.
Only serious canoeists can take part- those that hold a competition licence and canoeists from all over the world attend.
They must be fit because its a 20 k race down the river and when you're racing against around 1,000 other canoeists then you need an element of luck as well.
So if you fancy a battle from Arriondas to Ribadesella this is the place to be.
Close to Oviedo the party starts there, continues on the trains and then all the other strange manner of vehicles that people traditionally use in Spain to travel to events.
So it's Spain, another day another excuse for a party, Many people dress up in fancy dress and traditional garb.
The start is around 11 in the morning and as the canoeists fight there way down the river, the banks are filled with the cheering crowds.
After the race the party continues in the local towns and villages.
Good fun all day and great entertainment in Spain
