Spain Pavilion :: "Science and creativity"

Inspired by the light and the look of the poplar groves seen so frequently on the banks of the River Ebro, this pavilion has a large roof supported by a forest of pillars. It will house a new exhibition about bioclimatic architecture.

The façade of this pavilion is the counterpoint to the other large building situated to the west of the site: the Conference Centre Hotel. At the back, the Spain Pavilion is protected from the wind and the noise of traffic from the Ronda del Rabal with a front area, surrounded by very attractive greenery.

Special fiestas
24 June is the feast of San Juan in Spain, where fire plays a vital role. Throughout the day there will be different activities related with this element, so closely linked with the magical night of the summer solstice. Meanwhile, 16 July sees the feast of the Virgen del Carmen. To celebrate this there will be a major spectacle of dance, dedicated to women, created by artist Carmen París. Finally, on 15 August, feast of the Virgen de Agosto, sport and water games play a key role in this special fiesta at Expo 2008.

The Balcony Stages
Furthermore, there is a series of specific areas around the site with many different artists performing each day. They are known as the balcones animados (balcony stages), special rooms that host a range of different themes: performing arts (theatre, dance, clowns and contemporary circus); children's shows (puppets, clowns, circus…); music (different genres from jazz to classical, at different times of day); culture (dedicated to the artistic wealth of the countries taking part in the Expo); finally, the amphitheatre, which is the heart of the Night Expo. Here you will find a full programme, and each night is dedicated to one musical style: electronica, pop-rock, ballroom dancing, latin music… The night time attractions are completed by mobile spectacles, open-air music, flamenco, cabaret and café theatre.

Finally, the Auditorium, located outside the Expo site, hosts thirteen major classical music concerts, with internationally prestigious orchestras and conductors. At this website you can see the specific dates for each show at Expo 2008 as and when they are confirmed. Come to Zaragoza: don’t miss out.

The themed plazas are located between the Bridge Pavilion, Spain Pavilion and the Participants Building and their aim is to reinforce the message of the essential role of water from different viewpoints.

In total, there are six separate themed plazas with around 1,000 square metres of exhibition space.

The themed plazas are separate; each has an individual theme based around the central theme of the Expo: Water and Sustainable Development.

Aragón Pavilion :: "Water, different landscapes"

A fascinating, plaited structure symbolises the local tradition of basketweaving in Aragón. After the Expo finishes, it will house the Aragon Regional Parliament. Its recognisable and emblematic design responds to it being one of the largest buildings on this site as well as its key location, at the crossroads between the main avenues.

The outer surface is formed by interwoven plaits of glass and plate metal that define this unique form that offers particular strength to certain strategic corners, such as the one facing the River Ebro.

Inside, several structural columns/chimneys also serve as lighting systems and supports for exhibitions in the main hall and the upper hall of the pavilion. The three huge coloured columns that support the roof lean gently towards the roof and concluding the architectural metaphor, represent the objects contained in this giant "basket" construction.

Shows for all the family

EXPO 2008 is backing shows during the day as well as by night. Over the course of three months, more than 3,400 shows aimed at all kinds of audiences are planned. Music, dance, theatre, flamenco, special fiestas... Not to be missed!

Shows are one of the main attractions of the 2008 International Expo in Zaragoza. More than 300 companies and artists will take part in a programme aimed at children, young people and adults. The array on offer is highly varied, including internationally prestigious orchestras and musicians, street theatre, performance art, night time entertainment, film projections, cabaret, folk music... Fun is guaranteed by day (Day Expo) and of course by night (Night Expo). Take note - there is lots to choose from.

Major events at the Expo
Water and sustainable development is the theme that has inspired the Expo's four main events: the opening and closing ceremonies, the cavalcade and the night time spectacle. Beforehand, at Midday, there will be a daily parade all around the site. This mobile cavalcade is titled Archipelago of the desert, and has been designed by the prestigious Cirque du Soleil company. You will love its innovation and modernity, with the most original artistic design. A work that will live on in your memory. Furthermore, every night on the banks of the Ebro River, you can enjoy an exciting event titled Iceberg, visual poetic symphony. It is an impressive representation that aims to increase awareness about climate change, but with an optimistic, positive message for the future: with willingness on the part of mankind, new, balanced relationships with nature can be forged.

Aquatic inspirations
The Ojalá production company and the Argentinean artist Pichón Baldinu, artistic director of the De La Guarda company, will put on an impressive visual show six times a day that focuses on water use: El Hombre Vertiente (Spring man). It is a brilliant, spectacular, exciting work, a real tribute to water. Major collective, reflective catharsis with plenty of aerial acrobatics, amongst other things.
