The coast bathes in the Cantabrian sea and the region is home to the highest parts of the Cantabrian mountain range. It is bordered by the Cantabrian sea in the north, Galicia in the west, Cantabria in the east, and Castile and Leon in the south. The mountainous terrain of Asturias can be clearly divided into two parts. On the one hand there is the coast, with its sheer cliff faces that protect the beautiful beaches. On the other hand there is the Cantabrian mountain range that forms a natural border between Asturias and Castile and Leon. The highest peaks can be found in the Picos de Europa, and reach up to 2,648 metres. Some of the summits are well known and include Torre Cerredo, Peña Santa and Naranjo de Bulnes. Other notable peaks are Peña Rubia and Peña Ubiña (2,617 m). The rivers are short, but contain copious amounts of water, due to the heavy rainfall, and the waters that come from the melting of snow in the peaks. The most notable rivers are the Deva, the Sella, the Nalon, the Navia and the Eo (the last two are only partially in Asturias America Day in Asturias San Mateo fiestas in Oviedo 19th September 2007 Popular Holidays in Spain. Arts and culture in Spain As part of the San Mateo fiestas in Oviedo, the America day in Asturias parade is held This major cavalcade started as a tribute to the many Asturians who emigrated to America and would come back to Asturias in summer. Close to 2,000 people take part in this colourful parade with floats, folk groups and bands, with representation from Latin American countries, some countries in Europe, and from towns and villages in the region. Diplomats, politicians and personalities habitually attend the festivities, which get underway with the traditional parade of “haigas”, the old name for the huge American cars that emigrants brought back with them. Asturias Pastry Festival 8th-9th April 2007 On Easter Sunday and Monday, the people of Avilés celebrate with the Fiesta del Bollo (Pastry Festival). Originally set up with the intention of putting an end to the bitter rivalries between the local religious guilds at Easter, the gastronomic event has now been going strong for over 100 years. Today, festivities highlight a common ground for all to share. The theme is Asturian folklore, featuring regional dress, music and cuisine. There are cultural events and processions throughout Holy Week, but on Easter Sunday it is customary to wash down a traditional Asturian iced bun with a half bottle of white wine. These are on sale from kiosks in the centre. On the Monday there is a feast in the streets of the central part of the city. Tables and chairs are set up and families bring along Asturian dishes. You can also buy food from the local bars and restaurants. Get there early because there will be at least another 13,000 people with the same idea Avilés Town Hall Number +34 985 54 88 11 Email festejos@ayto-aviles.es Asturias XIV Oviedo Musical Theatre Festival 2007 Season Campoamor Theatre *13th, 14th, 16th and 17th February, 2007 “LA BODA” and “EL BAILE DE LUIS ALONSO” (Double Feature) Music by Jerónimo Giménez Libretto by Javier Burgos (Teatro de la Zarzuela Production – 2006) *20th, 21st, 23rd and 24th March “MARINA” Opera in Three Acts Music by Emilio Arrieta Libretto by Francisco Comprodón and Miguel Ramos Carrión (New Production by the Oviedo Opera Foundation and Campoamor Theatre) *24th, 25th, 27th and 28th April “THE BARBER OF SEVILLE” and “BOHEMIOS” (Double Feature) (Teatro de la Zarzuela Production - 2007) *15th, 16th, 18th and 19th May ANTHOLOGY OF ASTURIAN ZARZUELA “Vamos p’Asturias, vamos pa Oviedo” Original idea of Emilio Sagi, Ramón Sobrino and Emilo Casares First performed on 27th July, 2006 at the Campoamor Theatre (Campoamor Theatre Production – 2006) *5th, 6th, 8th and 9th June “EL REY QUE RABIÓ” Comic Zarzuela in Three Acts Music by Ruperto Chapí Libretto by Miguel Ramos Carrión and Vital Aza First performed at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid on 21st April, 1891 (Teatro de la Zarzuela Production – 2007) Natural Parks Parque Natural de las Fuentes del Narcea y del Ibias +34 985811498 Parque Natural de Redes [ Biosphere Reserve ] +34 985608110 Parque Natural de Somiedo [ Biosphere Reserve ] +34 985763758 Somiedo Reserva de la Biosfera de Muniellos, Alto Narcea, Degaña e Ibias [ Biosphere Reserve ] +34 985105545 Cangas del Narcea, Cangas del Narcea Beaches in Asturias San Antolín (Navés) Barro (Barro) San Lorenzo (Gijón)
