 Spain, the best skiing guaranteed

If skiing is your thing, you should already be thinking about Spain as a destination for next season. Our country is ideal for the sport. There are loads of reasons to come to one of the many ski resorts to be found all over Spain. Quality snow and plenty of winter sun, along with first-rate facilities and a broad range of complimentary activities are bringing more and more people to Spanish slopes every year. Why not come and join them?
Spain is Europe's second most mountainous country, with a long skiing tradition, and provides all the necessary facilities for you to practise the sport. We have 36 ski resorts spread all around the country. You just have to choose which one
Constant renovation
From the moment the skiing season ends in spring, through to the following December, our ski resorts undergo continuous renovation, with work on lifts, pistes, infrastructure, machinery, access, accommodation and services. Investments of millions of Euros are made each year, to improve on what are already resorts of the highest quality, with respect for the environment and the natural surroundings being of paramount importance
Resorts of all sizes
We have a wide range of winter resorts. They are equipped with excellent infrastructure, lifts, chair-lifts, and pistes to suit all levels. Spanish resorts are ideal for beginners and experienced skiers alike. Many of them are small resorts with easy runs, ideal if you want to learn as a family and make your first forays into this winter sport, whether in downhill, cross-country or Nordic skiing. Just choose the resort that suits you best. Come and try for yourself.

Snow, sun, leisure and culture
The sun in Spain shines even during the cold winter months. It is not unusual to ski with mild temperatures and bright sunshine. In addition to the good weather, we should also mention the excellent cultural and leisure activities available in Spain, with unparalleled historic/artistic heritage, a host of complementary activities that ensure fun for all, and lively nightlife at the resorts themselves with restaurants, bars and nightclubs

The Pyrenees Mountains, with their magnificent landscapes and welcoming mountain villages; Sierra Nevada, in Andalusia, with the Granada coast just over 100 kilometres away; the resorts of the Cantabrian Mountains, and those situated in central Spain... They are all perfectly equipped, and have excellent communications, ready to welcome you year after year to practise your favourite sport.

Put aside a few days to learn to ski and come to one of the Spanish resorts. It is a winter wonderland where you can get started in the sport while you discover a unique country that will welcome you with open arms

You can ski in Spain on a busker's budget. While there is a certain aura about the Alps resorts in France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, the Spanish Pyrenees area keeps up with the best of them (and certainly surpasses them with respect to value.) Baquiera-Beret, in Lerida, boasts a lengthy ski season (November through April), numerous slopes of varying difficulty, plenty of chair lifts, professional ski instruction and - this is the best part - far fewer crowds than the pricier resorts. A good place to stay is Hotel Montarto which offers spectacular views and easy access to lifts.

Enjoy the snow just a stone's throw from Madrid.

Skiing is one of the many alternatives available in Madrid. Have you ever thought about it? Take note, because just over an hour by car from the Spanish capital you will find three resorts where you can practise your favourite sport. Exchange the charms of the city for the pleasure of skiing for a few hours, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes that surround these resorts.
Don't miss the chance of an enjoyable day skiing at any one of the resorts close to Madrid. They have good communications and access, ideal for beginners and expert skiers alike, with pistes adapted to all levels. The plan is well worthwhile, because as well as skiing, you can also get to know the stunning countryside that surrounds the city. Make the most of the occasion. Get your skis ready, put your boots on, and head for the snowy slopes of these mountains in central Spain
The closest resort to Madrid is Puerto de Navacerrada, just 52 kilometres away on the A-6 motorway. It has a friendly, family atmosphere, along with almost 11 kilometres of pistes, many running through pine forest. The hardest runs are in the upper part of the resort, while in the lower area there are easier pistes, ideal if you are skiing for the first time. If snowboarding is your thing, then you are in luck - there is a piste here for boarders only. This resort is in the heart of the Madrid mountains. You can get there easily, even if you do not have a car - there are buses and regional rail services daily from Madrid
Not far from Navacerrada, beyond the Cotos pass, there is another interesting option: Valdesquí. Take advantage of its 19 kilometres of skiable area, with 27 quality pistes, most of which are fairly straightforward. This is also a good destination if your are taking the little ones. The resort offers an interesting package for children, including ski pass, equipment hire and two hours of ski school. The slopes and mountains of the region are covered in pine forest and offer picture-postcard beauty in the winter months - don't miss them. Access from Madrid is easy, both by road (bus or car) and using regional rail services.

Meanwhile, 115 kilometres from Madrid, in the province of Segovia, you will find La Pinilla. One hour by car on the A-1 motorway takes you very close to the village of Riaza, and this area's largest resort, with 20 kilometres of pistes, most of which are red runs - fairly difficult. This is a quiet resort - not too busy but very lively. You will notice this as soon as you arrive. In the winter months, for example, you will find sporting events held here such as dog-sledging, snow-bike and snow-running races.

As you can see, there is no excuse not to enjoy the snow in the Madrid region. Fun is guaranteed. What are you waiting for

Sierra Nevada Skiing
Sierra Nevada´s ski courses have been designed by European and American specialists, guaranteeing superb conditions for the skier. With a total of 61 kilometers spread over 39 runs, plus 6 sensational off-course trails, Sierra Nevada offers the visitor a wide choice of activities.
Sierra Nevada has a vertical drop of 1,300 meters, and snow areas for all types of skiers, from beginners to experts. The highlights of its courses were those used in the World Alpine Ski Championships held in February 1996, which more adventurous skiers will be able to enjoy this season.
Also, with the new chairlift to replace the Montebajo lift, overall skier carrying capacity is increased to 31,965 passengers per hour, made possible by a total of 19 lifts: 2 gondolas, 12 chairlifts (four of which are detachable), and 5 ski lifts. Four of these provide direct access to the ski area, the Al-Andalus and Borreguiles gondolas, and the Genil and Jara chairlifts.

Skiing in Spain
Most poeple associate Spain with the sunny Mediterranean climate of the Costa Brava and sports such as sailing and scuba diving rather than skiing. Although Spain is not often thought of as a premier skiing destination in Europe, Spain does possess a number of well equipped resorts for skiing. Because it is overshadowed by more popular skiing destinations in Switzerland and Italy, one may be pleasantly surprised by what they find when they go skiing in Spain. Skiing in Spain is, on the whole, a lot cheaper than skiing in the Swiss and Italian Alps. One will also find that in comparison to Skiing in Switzerland and Italy, skiing in Spain is a lot more pleasant experience because the ski resorts in Spain are less crowded.

Skiing in Season in Spain
Skiing season in Spain generally begins from December and runs through until April. The best conditions for skiing in Spain occur during January and February when the ample snowfall makes for fresh daily powder and excellent skiing. December is the busiest month for skiing in Spain because this is when people in Spain and the rest of Europe tend to have their Christmas holidays.

Skiing in the Pyrenees in Spain
The Pyrenees Mountains in Spain host some of the best resorts for skiing in Spain. The Aragon area in the Pyrenees Mountains is home to two skiing resorts. The Candanchu skiing resort is one of the best in Spain with over 50 ski pistes totalling more than 40 km in length. Accommodation at this skiing resort is also better than many others in Spain with three reasonable hotels and a few local restaurants to enjoy in the evenings.

Skiing in Catalonia in Spain
Catalonia is another area of the Pyrenees Mountains that provides good options for skiing in Spain. The La Molina skiing resort is an especially good resort for family skiing and beginner skiers because the pistes are not that difficult to negotiate. The Skiing resort at Baqueira-Beret in Spain is larger and more suitable for persons of different skiing abilities. This skiing resort is one of the largest in Spain as it provides 73 ski pistes in total and is well equipped with modern ski lifts. The altitude of skiing here is between 1500-2500m. Be warned though that accommodation at this Skiing resort is expensive and often hard to find in the peak skiing season in Spain.
