Xątiva Mediaeval Market
4th to 6th January 2009

The historic city of Xątiva, an inland city in the province of Valencia, will, between 4th and 6th January, be holding its already traditional mediaeval market, in which more than 50 craft stands, dressed up in the clothing of the era, will liven up the squares of the Mercat (Market) and that of Calixto III.
Organised by the City Council, this attractive market is set up, together with the Monumental Nativity Scene with animals, the gigantic ornamental tree and the decorative lighting, as part of the Christmas atmosphere of the city.

A diversity of things is on offer within the mediaeval market with shows, demonstrations and other attractions. The craftsmen set up stands of ceramics, leather, craftsmanship in precious metals, textile and brass products, amongst other things, while not forgetting the preparation of many different kinds of bread, sausages and traditional meals.

The craftsmen have programmed demonstrations on the way in which they work through workshops and, moreover, the market will also be the venue for theatre performances for visitors.

The squares in the old quarter, declared a historic-artistic complex, and in the immediate vicinity of which rise up outstanding monuments such as the Colegiata de Santa Maria (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria), the Hospital Real (Royal Hospital), the old convent of Sant Doménec or the Palace of l'Ardriacą, as well as ancestral homes of the nobility, will return to the splendour of their mediaeval past with colourful decorations and festive pennants.

The holding of the Market together with the arrival in the city of Their Majesties Los Reyes Magos (The Three Wise Men) by helicopter and the latter Cavalcade, bring the Christmas celebrations in Xątiva to an end.
