Semana Santa de Viveiro
 Easter Week in Viveiro
Popular Holidays in Spain.
Arts and culture in Spain
An emotive representation of the death of Jesus Christ.

The Easter Week celebrations in Viveiro have various important moments that make people live the processions through its streets with great intensity and feeling. This is especially true of Easter Wednesday, with the Stations of the Cross. Moving statues stage different scenes from the life and passion of Christ, such as the procession of the "Santo Encuentro" (Holy Encounter). Also worthy of mention are: the "llamada de los Caladiños", a call to serenity and recollection; the Passion, on the night of Good Friday. Local people get very involved with these celebrations - Viveiro has many religious brotherhoods and associations

The Viveiro estuary is the biggest one in the Cantabrian Sea, into which the Landro river flows. Viveiro, at its mouth, is the most important city in the whole region of A Mariña.
Viveiro has a very significant artistic heritage, beginning with the remains of its medieval wall, which withstood numerous pirate attacks in the 16th century, as well as fires and floods. Some vestiges of the wall remain, attached to houses or along passages, and three gates still stand, Porta do Castelo being the most significant because it bears the local coats of arms.

Holy Week processions, declared to be of tourist interest, begin at the Romanesque church of Santa María. Close to the traditional street of Rosalía de Castro, we find the church-convent of San Francisco, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. A motorway leads from the monument to the top of Mount San Roque, where we can have a magnificent view of the estuary.

To the monuments that we can see at Viveiro, we must add the town's open spaces, beaches, and natural surroundings, such as Souto da Retorta, also declared a Natural Monument, and considered to be the oldest eucalyptus forests in Europe. Its shores form tranquil estuary beaches with vast sands and excellent services, suitable for water sports. There we can go fishing, hunting and hiking, as well as enjoy numerous water sports. The marina and the lodging house favour these sporting activities
