Back Segorbe Fair of the Purísima (Holy Virgin)8 December On 8th December, around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Segorbe will be holding the Fair of the Purísima, a festive gathering that is a long-standing tradition. This mass gathering attracts people from all over the district and surrounding areas every year. The exhibition site, which opens its doors from 6th to 10th December from ten o' clock in the morning till ten o' clock at night, turns into a hive of activity with more than four hundred stalls, stands and booths around the historic centre of town, the Town Hall Square, Glorieta Municipal and adjacent streets - a place where the craftsmen of Alto Palencia exhibit their wares and where fairground attractions and tombolas are also set up. In the Fair of the Purísima one can find clothes, bags, books, crafts, decoration objects, gastronomy, toys and traditional articles for the country, cattle or for the home. Some 25,000 people come each year to visit this cheerful fair, which has ancient origins: it was first set up as a privilege granted in 14th century by the king Pedro IV el Ceremonioso (Peter IV the Ceremonious), who extended the concession of the extraordinary market day which, at the end of the 13th century, had been granted by the king Jaime I (James I). It is the custom on this day to "feriar" loved ones, that is to say, to present them with a gift purchased in the fair, and it is also a very special day for the little ones, who will be wrapping up warm and having a great time noseying around the toy stalls and going on the fairground rides.
