Santa Cruz de Tenerife Fiestas de Carnaval - Carnival
18th February to 1st March 2010
Arts and culture in Spain
Carnivals in Spain.

Tenerife says that this is the most flamboyant and extravagant of all carnivals..
Every year for 15 days Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes on the lifestyle and flavour of the best Brazilian carnivals.

On the Wednesday of the first week  all the contestants parade  to elect the Carnival Queen where some of the most beautiful and extravagantly costumed  beautiful woman  in the world parade in their fabulous costumes on a specially constructed 1,200 metre square stage. After the queen has been elected,  on the Friday:  streets for hours in a multi-coloured crowd of thousands dancing along to hundreds of musicians . Over the three next days, The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnaval  continues a more or less non stop party.
If it can get any better on Carnival Tuesday with “el Coso”, another amazing parade.
The next day the Burial of the Sardine marks the end of the festivities: the spirit of Carnival, symbolised by the sardine, is carried through the streets on a funeral bier, and is then set on fire and consumed by the flames to the despair of the entourage of inconsolable and “grief-stricken” widows, widowers and mourners. The final ending, however, is really the celebration of the “Piñata Chica” at the weekend, with shows, dances and parades. All the carnivals in Spain are spectacular but this is a very special event indeed and needs to be booked and planned well in advance.
