Romeria style pilgrimage to Nuestra Señora of the Cabeza in Andújar
Religious procession to the highest peak of the Sierra Morena.
Dressed in colourful traditional clothing the people of Andalucia trek to a high mountain of The Siera Morena and The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Cabeza. The fiesta begins in Andújar the previous day and then the procession takes the "Virgin of the Head” statue from the la Merced Church, across the famous “Puente Nuevo”, to the mountain top where during the night they sing and dance in front of the Sanctuary. On the last day of the fiestas the procession of the image of the Virgin takes place, closing the fiestas. Always taking place on the last Sunday of April. This celebration has its origins in the 13th century, and some half a million people gather to see the Virgin paraded among the forests for over 30 kilometres.
