Price Circus Theatre
Located in Ronda de Atocha, by the Embajadores tube station, this large leisure space joins a series of cultural establishments like La Casa Encendida (Ronda de Valencia, 2), Matadero Madrid (Paseo de la Chopera, 12) or the Centro Dramático Nacional. They are all sound supporters of the avant-garde and have transformed this area of the city into the ideal space for experimentation.
The new Price has been welcomed with great expectation by the circus world, since it represents the institutional recognition of their work, and the recuperation of a myth: the theatre founded by Thomas Price in the late 19th century.

When Thomas Price , descendant of the famous English acrobats, the Price Brothers, came to Madrid in 1861, Madrid’s citizens went to the circus as frequently as they went to the theatre. The city had over ten venues with shows every night. Consequently, this sharp businessman decided to open a permanent circus in the city.

A few years later, a sumptuous building was inaugurated in the plaza del Rey, accommodating shows by internationally renowned artists like Pinito del Oro, a trapeze artist who some say could break the laws of gravity, or Charlie Rivel, who many considered the quintessential clown.

Over one century of circus tradition did nothing to avoid the demolition of the ancient Teatro Circo Price (Price Circus Theatre) in 1970. It seemed like the legend had come to an end, but it only seemed like it, because, after a 37 year break, the circus, now, returns.

Under the canvas, which is made of metal not cloth this time, tradition and the avant-garde will shake hands. A stable circus in Madrid means that spectators will be able to laugh or cry, or laugh and cry, all year round.

Mornings will be for school groups and in the afternoon the 13-metre diameter stage will also be available for other events: concerts, theatre, dance, or whatever is on the programme.

The first programme

After warming up the engines with the successful Christmas programme, the Price Circus will be staging its official presentation on March 16th with the show Charivari, a tribute to all the generations of artists that have devoted, devote and will devote their lives to the wonderful and marvellous world of the circus.

There will be over seventy international artists including the best trapeze artists, tightrope walkers, horses from the Medrano Circus from Paris, first-class Spanish artists, live music by the Price Orchestra and the unforgettable clowns.

Furthermore, from April 10th to May 9th, the Price Circus organises Circo en el Aula (Circus in the Classroom), a programme for children and teenagers who want to enjoy circus activities for a month. As of May 30th (until July 22nd) it will accommodate the exhibition Nicaragua 1990-2006, as part of PhotoEspaña 2007.
