The second weekend in July and the whole week running up to it, the village of Nava, in Asturias, lives its most outstanding festivities: the Cider Festival. The event was first held in 1969. Over these days the village is packed with cultural activities related to the drink – so deep-rooted in the region.
There are talks, discussions, exhibitions, concerts, theatre… until Saturday’s proclamation and the firecracker that marks the start of a free tasting session where thousands of litres of cider are consumed. The only requirement to drink for free is that you are wearing a green handkerchief tied around your neck. On Sunday, the last day of the fair, there is the International Pouring Competition.
