Every year, one of the communities in the park has the honour of hosting the Sierra de Espadán Congress of Municipalities. Most of the important events activities will be taking place on 5th June in Vall de Almonacid, specifically in the area surrounding the Plaza de la Iglesia square and adjacent streets.The aim of this annual event is also to foster values such as environmental education and encourage the participation and involvement of local residents, from an area that stretches between the municipalities of Aín, Azuébar, Fuentes de Ayódar, Torralba del Pinar, Alcudia de Veo, Chóvar, Higueras, Villamalur, Almedíjar, Eslida, Pavías, Alfondeguilla, Ayódar, Tales, Algimia de Almonacid, Matet, Vall de Almonacid, Artana and SuerasSierra de Espadan Nature Parkis situated in the Iberian range including the Espina and Espadán sierras, separating the Mijares and Palancia river basins. The Espina sierra is crowned by mount Santa Bárbara de Pina (1,405m) sheltering valuable vegetation on its foothills. In the Espadán sierra, a unique combination of Triassic sandstone soil and copious rainfall maintains magnificent pine tree and cork oak forests. The villages of Aín, Almedíjar, Eslida, and Villamalur - among others - provide access to the Sierra de Espadán Nature Park, with its network of signposted hiking routes: the GR-36 and a number of Short-Distance Hiking Routes. Around the festivity of San Juan (24 June) the extraction of cork from the cork oaks enlivens the local scenery, with the usually dark tree trunks turning bright red in a magic contrast of chromatics.The Serra d'Espadà Nature Reserve is located in the south of Castellón province, in the last foothills of the Iberian System, being one of the best kept natural spaces in the whole Valencian Community. The Sierra de Espadán is a large mountain range with countless springs, cool ravines and shady cork oak woods, spreading over the counties of Alto Mijares, Alto Palancia and la Plana Baixa, between the basins of the river Mijares and the Palancia. The surface area classified as nature reserve takes up roughly 31,000 Ha. This fact has made it the largest extension of Protected Natural Space in the Valencian Community. Of the 19 municipalities connected, 11 have their municipal boundaries within the limits of the nature reserve (Aín, Alcudia de Veo, Almedíjar, Azuébar, Chóvar, Eslida, Fuentes de Ayódar, Higueras, Pavías, Torralba del Pinar and Villamalur); while the other 8 (Alfondeguilla, Algimia de Almonacid, Artana, Ayódar, Matet, Sueras, Tales and Vall de Almonacid), are only partially included. Carrascar de la Font Roja This protected nature area occupies the Menejador sierra (1,352m) in the municipal areas of Alcoi and Ibi. Chera-Sot de Chera Natural Park Description : This natural spot, situated inland in the province of Valencia, is included within the districts of Chera and Sot de Chera. With a surface area of 6,451.17 hectares, it has some relevant environmental, landscape and cultural values as well as being the site of the first geological park of the Region of Valencia, the Chera Geological Park. Its territorial scope is also included in the LIC (Place of Community Interest) of Sierra Negrete. Amongst the activities that can be carried out here one can highlight mountaineering in the area of Buseo and hill walking, so as to be able to enjoy, along numerous paths, some natural landscapes closely related to traditional human activity in rural environments. The active presence of mountaineers, who journey through this emblematic natural space, camping in its valleys and climbing to its summits, is already traditional in these mountains. Halfway between the Valencian districts of La Plana de Utiel-Requena and Los Serranos, this natural park has an abrupt and mountainous relief, with heights of around 1000 metres. Gorges and gullies, close to the Buseo reservoir, alternate with the vegetation of pines, junipers, rosemary and esparto and abundant natural springs Desert de les Palmes Nature Park This coastal range of mountains, rising up from the otherwise flat La Plana district, extends through the municipal areas of Benicàssim, Borriol, Castellón de la Plana, Cabanes, Oropesa and La Pobla Tornesa.A coastal mountain range, above the otherwise flat La Plana district, which extends through the municipal areas of Benicàssim, Borriol, Castellón de la Plana, Cabanes, Oropesa and La Pobla Tornesa. The name of the so-called Desert of the Palm Trees does not refer to an actual desert, but historically relates to a Carmelite monastery where a spiritual refuge was sought. The area is home to numerous pine trees, cork oaks, shrubs and aromatic plants. Les Agulles de Santa Àgueda is a site richly endowed with reddish cluster pines from which magnificent views can be gained. Other points of interest are the Bartolo peak (729m), the castles of Miravet and Montornés, the Carmelite convent or hermitage of the Les Santes. The Bartola information centre is located in the park (kilometre 7.8 along the Magdalena-Desert road, tel. 964 76 072 Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park The Cabriel river divides Valencian and Castilian regions for 50 km., from the Contreras dam to its confluence with the Xúquer river in Cofrentes. The Cabriel river creates a rich habitat for flora and fauna and includes protected bird species such as the golden eagle, the Bonnelli's eagle and the eagle owl. The river is the home to river otters, autochthonous crabs and madrillas. La Albufera Nature Park Lying to the south of the city of Valencia, the Albufera freshwater lagoon is one of the most important nature areas in the Land of Valencia. La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Nature Park Extending all the way across the municipal areas of Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Guardamar del Segura are the La Mata and Torrevieja lagoons, which are still used for salt extraction, as they have been for many decades Mariola Sierra Nature Park The Sierra Mariola is basically a limestone massif located on the borders of the towns of Agres, Alfafara, Alcoi, Banyeres de Mariola, Bocairent, and Cocentaina. Parque Natural de La Tinença de Benifassà The Natural Park of la Tinença de Benifassà stretches between the regions of Els Ports and El Baix Maestrat, in Castellón. The ancient possessions of the Benifassà monastery extend across a mountainous area of great ecological value. Santa Pola Salt Flats Nature Park Near the ancient wetlands outside Santa Pola, salt has been mined since the beginning of the 20th C at Braç del Port, El Pinet, etc., contributing to changes along the edge of these marshlands. Serra Gelada Natural Park Serra Gelada Natural Park is 5,653,92 hectares, of which 4,908,95 are marine environment, and 744.97 are land consisting of the towns of Benidorm, l`Alfás del Pí and Altea. The beautiful Golden Eagle is one of the best known birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere, see it in it's natural habitat in the National Parks of Spain. ![]()
Spanish National and Nature Parks plus Places of Interest Spain has 15 National Parks, of which 10 are on the mainland, 1 in the Balearic Islands and 4 in the Canary Islands. We have featured them all here together with some of the many Natural Parks. Andalucia Alpujarras A unique area situated between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Costa Tropical coastline, shaped by the Moors before their removal in the 16th century, encompassing around 50 villages. Cabo de Gata Nature Park An area of volcanic rock formations on the Costa de Almeria coastline. Doñana National Park Situated in a triangle between Cadiz, Sevilla and Huelva, this is the largest and most important wetland area in Spain, amounting to over 1,300 sq Km. Los Alcornocales Nature Park 170,000 Ha of Cork forest (one of the worlds largest) straddling the borders of Cadiz and Malaga. Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park The highest rainfall in the Iberian peninsula has shaped this landscape where there are forest of Spanish Pine and over 1300 other plant species, including some that are unique. Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park Covering 18,000 Ha with some of the deepest caves in the world, forests of the rare Spanish Pine, and 90 species of birds breeding here in the backdrop to Marbella. Sierra Nevada National Park Covering 86,000 Ha and including the two highest peaks of mainland Spain. Aragon Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park Stunning valleys, forests, meadows with wild flowers and one of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees complete with glacier. Asturias Redes Natural Park Near the Picos de Europa, this rugged partially forested area is an extremely picturesque area for walking. Picos de Europa National Park Said by many to be the most picturesque mountains in Spain, also is home to the deepest caves. There is something for everyone here. Balearic Islands Archipiélago de Cabrera National Park An island with 100 inhabitants and 18 surrounding islets, 10 Km south of Mallorca, with a well preserved land and sea environment. Castilla La Mancha Cabaneros National Park 41,000 Ha of varied landscape which some have described as African in nature - a birdwatchers paradise, particularly for birds of prey . Tablas de Daimiel National Park A unique wetland on the migration route for many waterfowl. Nature - Getting away from it all in Spain
