FiestaSan Juan Night is also known as Witches. Night and the Summer Solstice. Ancient magic and ritual, lot's of fire and the cleansing water. A midnight swim is customary to ensure beauty, health and fortune for the coming year, and there are traditional bonfires where the old is burnt to make way for the new. It is customary to have a bonfire on the beach though nowadays even in Spain, health & safety is kicking in. Certainly the event this writer attended last year, the policia local and bomberos put out all the un-official bonfires and when the official bonfire was lit, it was roped off and no-one was allowed to jump over it as is customary. So the event was spoilt by officialdom. They did not mind however lot's of people, however drunk they were from swimming off across the sea towards the moon. (Feel the magic of this night on Spain's beaches, surrounded by people who come together around the bonfires-if you're lucky and swim in the sea, with the reflection of the full moon's silvery light.) It is a great night and is usually followed by a concert and disco on the beach.
