Music and enfarinats on December 28th

Ibi celebrates its unique Winter Festival. December 28th is a special day, with the celebration of the Día dels Enfarinats, one of the most important festivities related to the Holy Innocents' Day - Spain's equivalent of April Fool's Day. The flour battle, which takes place amidst a carnavalesque and satirical atmosphere, represents the struggle between the authorities and the opposition.

Els enfarinats is a group of 14 public elected officers (amongst them the mayor and other public servants, such as the judge, the bailiff, etc.). The opposition, wearing back top hats, tries to take power away from the elected officers. A flour battle ensues, in which both parties throw flower at each other while fireworks explode. Els enfarinats is a spectacular explosion of noise, fun and tradition.

Jalance, located in the Ayora-Cofrentes valley, also celebrates its Holy Innocents' Day with a special tradition: la Fiesta de los Locos. Filled with pagan symbolism, the festivity traces its origins back to the 17th century. Youngsters dressed with eccentric clothes and flashy makeup become the power holders in the town for a few hours, as brass bands take to the streets filling the air with music.

The baile de los locos ("the mad people dance") takes place that same night, a night in which almost anything is allowed and picaresque and music take center stage. Come to Jalance and... join the craze!
