Mystery of the Passion (Lleida)
Religious play that reflects the passion of Christ through the residents of Cervera.

This play has been performed since 1481. A curious anecdote, found in a chronicle from 1570, tells that during the passage regarding the Crucifixion of the Lord, several people were injured when the crowd, worked up over what they saw, attacked the stage with sticks to punish the soldiers and the Jews.

The living Passion is performed in Castilian. Today, the performance of 'Christ, Mystery of the Passion' lasts nearly six hours. It is important to note that the roles are played by nearly 500 people who have nothing to do with theatre and whose only contact with these performances comes during Lent. This play is performed every Sunday during Lent in the Grand Theatre of the Passion.

Cervera is the capital of the region of Segarra, located between the mountain pass of Les Savines and the Ondara riverbank, in the province of Lleida.
This town carries out an intense commercial and industrial activity, especially in the field of agriculture, as well as the service industry. It is also the centre of an exciting cultural and artistic life, which can be seen specially at the Stately Home of Duran i Sanpere, in the International Music Courses held here, and the traditional plays of the Passion of Christ
