The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum
has become the cultural and tourist icon of the Basque Country.
A breathtaking building, built by Frank O. Gehry in 1997, somewhat startlingly  sheathed in titanium. A magnificent building in it's own right but also contains several wonderful art collections from around the world.
Art through the centuries (El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya, and Van Dyck), contemporary art (Gauguin, Bacon, and Tàpies), and Basque art (Regoyos, Zuloaga, and Iturrino).

Kafe Antzokia
The best live music venue in Bilbao
Welcome to Kafe Antzokia
Welcome to Kafe Antzokia, Bilbao's most important live music hotspot, now also open in Ondarroa, a coastal village between Bilbao and San Sebastian.
Open in Bilbao in December 1995, Kafe Antzokia is a former theatre building renewed to become a complete cultural venue. Our stage features mostly music (from Basque music to international pop-rock bands, world music, reggae...) and theatre.
In addition to the shows on stage, our DJ's play a wide selection of music every weekend, with special attention to Basque pop-rock. So, Kafe Antzokia is one of the most crowded places in Bilbao every saturday night.
But Kafe Antzokia is not alive only by night. At every hour of the day there are different ambiances and people. In the morning, many students came to have a coffee break. And at lunch time, it becomes a restaurant (with tables set even on the stage!) wich serves meals daily for more than 200 people.
Every sunday afternoon children have their time to enjoy clowns' shows and theatre. Youths between 12 and 16 also have their own activities every saturday afternoon.
Kafe Antzokia is not just a music club with live shows like so many others you may already know. it's part of a collective project which is "non profit" or which we could better describe as "cultural profit". All the revenues generated by our work are re-invested in promoting our language, the Basque language, by means of Zenbat Gara, the culture association funded by Kafe Antzokia.

Basque traditionalism and an up to date attitude make Bilbao an interesting and vibrant city.
Bilbao is well known for its up to date and in your face attitude. If it's new and trendy then it must be Bilbao.
Avant-garde art, fashion, music and leisure are an everyday affair in Bilbao, a city filled with trendy shops, great pop and rock concerts, and excellent venues for live performances.
Allthe events in Bilbao are well documented on other pages in this site such as  Bilbao Fantasy Cinema Festival, in April and May, and the International Short Film and Documentary Festival in November.
The city teems with attractive night spot for young people from the whole northern area of the peninsula, adding new initiatives like the city council's Bilbao-Gaua (Bilbao-Night) to the traditional nightclubs, bars, and "clubbing" areas. Each weekend, this nightly leisure programme offers numerous activities to young people; all kinds of games, workshops, classes, storytelling gatherings, and cinema sessions around the different districts of the city.

Football
Athletic Bilbao

Full name Athletic Club
Nickname(s) Los Leones (The Lions)
Founded 1898

Ground San Mamés,
Bilbao, Spain
(Capacity 39,750[1])
League La Liga
Famous for two main things; they have never been out of the top flight of Spanish football and were a founding team in 1928.
Secondly and most importantly in this day and age they only play footballers from the Basque territories and are much admired for it.
They have won La Liga on eight occasions and the Copa del Rey twenty-four times.
They are known as the Rojiblancos or Zurigorri because of their red and white striped shirts and as Los Leones because their stadium was built near a church called San Mamés (Saint Mammes). Mammes was an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Romans. The lions refused to eat Mames and he was later made a saint.
