The Festival sees itself as a place for discovery and reflection, an opportunity to see feature films, short films, animation and documentaries that invite us to rethink our world, fly far away (from Mexico to Armenia), and learn and unlearn about ourselves.
The aim is to shake us into feeling alive by shooting images at us, like the man with the photographic gun in this year's poster, which pays tribute to the very early age of film in the form of Étienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904). Inspired by the work of Eadweard Muybridge, this French scientist designed a device to capture the stages of a body in motion on a glass plate.
We invite you to come and enjoy this 14th edition of a festival full of innovative screenings, workshops and concerts. The Festival team is eager to return what we've got from you over the years: a commitment to motivating, independent filmmaking.
A truly alternative and independent
festival in Barcelona, l'Alternativa's philosophy is to champion
the kind of filmmaking that is inspirational, shuns the easiest
conventional paths and dares to take risks. In other words, the
festival presents a programme of emotional and thought-inspiring
cinema that’s unlikely to be seen in more mainstream programming
