Fiesta La Patrona
2 August 2008
Pollenca, Majorca
Mock battles on the beach
Life was tough in the early days of Spain. Moors fighting Christians, no-one quite knew who had what land, and pirates all over the place from Ifach to Gibralter along the coast and out to the islands, pirates plundered all and sundry. Some towns such as Benissa exist because the locals got fed up with being robbed by pirates every couple of days so they moved ten miles inland.
Anyway, over in Majorca around 1550, a local toughie pirate was beaten by villages led by one Joan Mas.
That's a good excuse for a party, not that the Spanish need an excuse. The People of Pollenca call this fiesta,
'The Fiesta Patrona'

The Requena Wine Harvest Festival
22nd August to 2nd September
The Wine Harvest Festival of Requena is added to what was the old Fair, of mediaeval origin.
The Wine Harvest Festival stems from the old festivities in which the entrance of the autumn and the time of the grape harvest were celebrated. This festival was born of these simple festivities and it serves as a promotion of the excellent wines of the land. It was 1948 when seven people decided to try to unite their fellow citizens in the difficult post-war years through this festival. Without a doubt those men were ignorant of the fact that their initiative gave birth to the first wine harvest festival in Spain, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1964.
