AlmeríaAndalusia Tourist Office: Parque Nicolás Salmerón, s/n Esquina Martínez Campos - 04002 Almería Tel. +34 950274355 DISCOVER ALMERIA Set on the coast, surrounded by mountains, this is a bright city whose oldest neighbourhoods abound in colour. Its location fills this province with contrasts: there is desert in one part and a wealth of plantations in another. With its port that looks out to the Mediterranean, Almería is an open, hospitable city, and has been host to the many different cultures that left their mark here. The city offers a wide range of options, from museums, monuments, walks through streets that bring its history to mind… through to beautiful countryside waiting to be discovered. The Almeria Fair 17th to 26th AugustAlmería also has an important fair, like all the provinces of Andalusia. For the ten days of its grand fiesta, Almería residents and all those who want to spend these days in the best of atmospheres, give themselves over completely to enjoyment: to laugh, eat, drink and have a good time surrounded by family and friends is the main objective.
It is celebrated in honour of the Virgen del Mar, patron saint of the city, and has been designated Fiesta of International Tourist Interest. Floral offerings in honour of the Virgin combine with fiesta in the city streets, flamenco music and bullfighting during the day. The Almería Fair takes place in the second half of August and you can enjoy it with two different atmospheres that share one common goal: fun and enjoyment. On one side, you can experience the daytime fair in the streets of the city centre, while on the other you can continue the enjoyment by night at the "Real" fair ground, the perfect place to have a good time, with a range of attractions, stalls and marquees.
If you come to Almería at this time of year, you can come to the last Saturday of the fair, the day of the Virgen del Mar, when a great floral offering is made to the city´s patron saint. It is a public holiday and there is also a "rociera" mass.Typical costumes, a variety of tapas, music, flamenco shows, bullfights? come and discover a very different Almería!
How to get to the Real de la Feria ground?
To get to the scene of the fair by night, on these days there are special city bus services that stop right at the fair ground. They usually run into the early hours and depart from the city centre. Departures are from the Compañía de María and Paseo de Almería stops. The journey will cost you no more than €1.DELICIOUS Besides Almería´s artistic attractions, it also has excellent local gastronomy that you can savour in any of its bars and restaurants.
Fried fish, seafood and “migas” (fried breadcrumb dish) are Almería´s star tapas. We would suggest a visit to the Puerta de Purchena area, the most representative part of the city if you want to enjoy typical cuisine: local tapas, not forgetting the delicious grilled cuttlefish.
Tapas are what most sets this city apart. In many bars and restaurants you can find the so-called “chericans”, slices of toasted bread with garlic mayonnaise, topped with all kinds of different ingredients. For those with a sweet tooth, special mention should be made of “roscos” (like doughnuts), cream buns, puff pastries and homemade jams.
Winter in Almeria - a great winter destination If you want to get away from the bone chilling cold of winter then look no further. One of the best destinations to head towards is Almeria in the southeast corner of Spain where the climate even in winter does not fall below an average of 13 degrees Celsius. Rest and unwind in one of the most charming and unspoiled regions in southern Spain.
The generally warm and dry climate with low rainfall in this region ensures that your trip will enjoy mild weather and don't forget that the number of hours of sun enjoyed per year is over 3,000! No wonder Almeria is the home of Europe's largest solar energy plant. So don't hesitate, Almeria is the only destination in the whole of Europe that will ensure that you don't end up with those "winter blues"! Now you have a choice of seeking solace in balmy weather instead of facing the gloom of winter.
You can reach Almeria by traveling to the nearby international airports in Murcia, Granada and Malaga. Due to its location near the coast, protected by the natural barrier of Sierra de Gador, this province consists of semi arid desert like landscape which is conducive to agricultural produce. Moreover you can join the fiestas that are celebrated along the coastline as well as browse the popular handicrafts in pottery, ceramics, esparto, rugs and marble whilst enjoying gastronomic delights like paprika, gurullos and seafood, a legacy from Almeria's rich past. While you are there you can visit the Moorish citadel, Alcazaba and the Gothic cathedral, a 300 year old hospital, spectacular beaches and many tapas bars. If you do not want to go to jail don't go to the square of the Town Hall of Velez-Rubio. A local person takes over from the Mayor for the day and names his councillors who send everyone who appears in the square to jail. And the new mayor invites all the "prisoners" to an apperitive, behind bars however!
