THE 57th INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL OF HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY OF TORREVIEJA - 23rd to 30th of July 2011
THE 57th INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL OF HABANERAS AND POLYPHONY OF TORREVIEJA
 23rd to 30th of July 2011

This choir festival is a tribute to the sailors of Torrevieja
(Alicante province), who for hundreds of years have sailed to trade with Cuba and over time brought these popular melodies back with them.

The Torrevieja International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition is the most outstanding event of its type in Spain. Torrievieja on the shores of the Mediterranean has been hosting the competition since 1955. Its gentle songs serve as a point of encounter for people from many different countries.

The festival is held in the “Eras de la Sal” (old salt deposits) and features the best choral groups in the genre from all over the world. As a prelude to the July event, there is usually a Children’s and Youth Habaneras Competition in May, where competing groups are obliged to perform a specific piece.

Exported from Cuba the habanera is a type of Cuban popular dance music of the 19th century. It has a characteristic "Habanera rhythm", and is performed with sung lyrics. It was the first dance music from Cuba to be exported all over the world.
The first Contest of Habaneras in Torrevieja was in 1955.
The contest has now been declared to be of "International Tourist  Interest". There are two categories: national and the international
has become a reference point in the world of Choir Music.
